Is there any hope?

My undergrad degree is in psychology, but there are limited opportunties for its use in a work setting. I am considering applying for some volunteer counseling positions so that I am not trying to get an advanced degree in something where I have no professional experience. I worked for the department of corrections as an officer for four years, which is the only experience that I have that is remotely related to social work/counseling, but I am no longer in that field. I returned to office work in order to finish my bachelor’s degree and have a more stable home life.
What do you think is the best course of action?
Wisconsin requires 3000 hours of supervised counseling for either mental health counselor or LCSW.
I just wondered if when applying for jobs after grad school they would wonder why I never worked in the field before seeking an advanced degree.
